The technical bit ...

There are two types of Air-con system, one that uses an expansion valve and receiver drier. The other that uses an orifice tube and Accumulator.

Expansion valve system

Orifice tube system

If you follow the refrigerant flow round the system, starting with the compressor, the compressor compresses the refrigerant from a low pressure vapour to a high pressure vapour. The high pressure vapour is then passed to the condenser, where it is condensed by the cooling air flow to a high pressure liquid. The high pressure liquid is then passed to the filter drier, where it is cleaned and all the moisture is removed. The cleaned, dry high pressure liquid is passed to the expansion valve, where it is changed to a low pressure mixture of liquid and vapour. The low pressure refrigerant mixture is then passed to the evaporator, where the remaining liquid is turned back to a low pressure vapour, cooling the air passing over the evaporator, the low pressure vapour passes back to the compressor, which pumps it round the system.

Follow the refrigerant round, starting from the compressor, the compressor compresses the refrigerant from a low pressure vapour to a high pressure vapour. The high pressure vapour is then passed to the condenser, where it is condensed by the cooling air flow to a high pressure liquid. The high pressure liquid is then passed to the orifice tube, where the flow is restricted, changing the refrigerant to a low pressure liquid.

The low pressure liquid is then passed to the evaporator where the liquid is turned partially to a vapour, cooling the air passing over the evaporator as it does so.

From the evaporator the low pressure mixture of liquid and vapour is passed to the accumulator, where the remaining liquid is boiled back to vapour. The pure low pressure vapour passes back to the compressor, which then starts the cycle again.
